7 Signs of Gutter Damage on Your Home

damaged rain gutter

If you’re like most people, your gutters are not something you often think about. They need routine gutter cleaning, but otherwise, their functionality is very simple.

It’s not until rain gutters aren’t doing their job that you understand just how important they are for your home!

WHAT DO GUTTERS DO?

Gutters and downspouts go virtually unnoticed on most homes in Chesapeake. They fade into the home’s exterior unless the homeowner decided on copper or wood … materials that are meant to stand out! Most are made of durable yet lightweight aluminum or vinyl siding.

The point of rain gutters is to create a path of minimal resistance for rain and snow to get off your roof. When they’re in good shape, your gutters will lead runoff away from the home’s foundation and landscaping, protecting your home’s exterior from mildew and mold, the concrete and pavement and basement from leaks, and the rain gutters themselves from wear and rust.

When gutters are damaged, it can cause thousands of dollars’ worth of damage to your house and surrounding property.

ARE YOUR GUTTERS DAMAGED?

Gutter damage is too simple to repair to be the cause of major home repairs! Inspecting your gutters is simple and safe. If you notice any of the following signs, it’s a strong clue that your rain gutters have some kind of damage.

Once you identify a gutter problem, you can decide if it’s something you are comfortable repairing or remedying on your own or if it’s a project you should trust a gutter repairman for.

Sitting Water Near Your Home

Pooling water is a good sign that your gutters or downspouts are not sending the water runoff away from your home the way they should be. Pooling water can lead to mold, weakening of your foundation, and provides the perfect habitat for mosquitoes. Plus, it will leave the areas surrounding your house constantly soggy and muddy.

Mold or Mildew

Mold or mildew is a bad sign, whether you see mold or mildew on the gutters or the sides of your home. Mold and mildew indicate there is a lot of moisture around that area – a possible issue with the rain gutters could be to blame. Keep in mind that mold and mildew are likely to grow on the north side of a home anyway, so if that’s where these substances are growing, it may be because that area gets very little direct sunlight. This is a scenario when the advice and expertise of a gutter specialist in Chesapeake would be a great help.

Rain Pouring Over the Gutter

You’ll need to wait until it’s actually raining to notice this type of gutter problem. Hopefully this doesn’t mean your gutters are damaged. It could just be that the gutter is full of debris and should be cleaned. In either case, you want to have it looked at right away.

Basement Leaks

Depending on the construction of your home’s basement, the leaking could be caused by any number of things. The standing water issue we mentioned before could definitely cause a basement leak. Egress windows and even cinder block walls will only keep out so much water. That’s why it is important to keep your gutters in good condition!

Landscaping or Lawn Damage

Rain gutters empty directly onto the ground most of the time, and landscaping should be designed to work with this flow of water to help it disperse into the ground. However, a leaking gutter or clogged gutter will allow rainfall to overflow or pool where it isn’t supposed to. This water can destroy plants either by force or by overwatering. It can also displace flower bed building materials like rock or mulch.

Water Marks

Water marks are a visible sign that there is a lot of moisture on a surface. Water marks are left behind even if standing water has evaporated or dissipated into the ground. You usually find water marks right under the gutters or directly behind the downspouts. This is a usually a sign that water is running down the outside of the gutters rather than staying inside of them.

Visible Gutter Damage

The last sign of gutter damage is by far the easiest to find. If your gutters are bent, sagging or cracked in the middle, they obviously have damage. Following a storm, it’s a smart idea to walk around your house to identify any possible damage to the roof shingles, exterior, and gutters. These inspections are in addition to any standard home inspections.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR GUTTERS?

Here are some easy ways Chesapeake Gutter Solutions recommends to help prevent gutter damage:

Clean your gutters out at least one time a year. You can lengthen the amount of time between gutter repairs by having them cleaned out regularly. As with anything else, the better you care for your rain gutters, the fewer issues you’ll experience with them.

The best time to clean out gutters is during the spring, but to be extra cautious, give them a good cleaning in the fall, too. Many homeowners clean their gutters on their own, but there are local gutter cleaning companies that provide this service so you don’t have to deal with the mess or the risk.

Inspect your gutters often. Signs of gutter damage can often be visible from the outside of the gutters. Just a quick inspection – with both feet firmly on the ground – will reveal any of the problems we mentioned above.

We’d recommend that you complete an exterior home inspection following each season to be sure that your gutters are functioning the right way.

When you see signs of gutter damage, act fast. Fixing a problem before it becomes too bad can save you a lot of time and money. A small crack, for example, can be sealed, or the section of gutter with the crack can be replaced very affordably.

But, if you let the problem go on for too long, you might end up making repairs in your basement, replacing vinyl siding or redoing an entire section of landscaping.
